Adaptive wetland management in an uncertain and changing arid environment Ecology and Society

Wetlands in the arid western United States provide rare and critical migratory bird habitat and constitute a critical nexus within larger social-ecological systems (SES) where multiple changing land-use and water-use patterns meet. The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge in Utah, USA, presents a case study of the ways that wetland managers have created adaptive management strategies that are responsive to the social and hydrological conditions of the agriculture-dominated SES within which they are located. Managers have acquired water rights and constructed infrastructure while cultivating collaborative relationships with other water users to increase the adaptive capacity of the region and decrease conflict. Tanzania is very rich in wetland resources which include the Great Lake systems, major rivernetworks and deltaic mangroves. The major lakes and floodplains have long provided afertile resource base as they include alluvial plains of great agricultural potential. Wetlands in Tanzania support an extensive trading and transport system, fishing grounds,agro-pastoral activities, hydrological processes and, more recently, the harnessing of the riverflows for irrigation and hydroelectric power.

In the Pantanal, the largest continuous floodplain in the world, the diversity and distribution of anuran amphibians vary in and across distinct subregions and distinct habitats occurring along inundation gradients. Permanent and natural aquatic habitats are relatively scarce in the Pantanal, and occurrence of temporary aquatic habitats varies seasonally, depending on rains. El ciervo de los pantanos (Blastocerus dichotomus) está categorizado Vulnerable a nivel mundial y En Peligro en Argentina. Estudiamos la distribución de la especie en la provincia de Corrientes (Argentina), utilizando el método de entrevistas a informantes claves. Sobre una imagen satelital del área de estudio trazamos un grillado de cuadrículas de 30 x 30 km, luego cada cuadrícula fue dividida en 4 subcuadrículas de 15 x 15 km. Se realizó al menos una entrevista por subcuadrícula. Se totalizaron 148 entrevistas, relevándose 45 cuadrículas. En 27 cuadrículas se obtuvo al menos una entrevista positiva. The assemblage of arthropods and helminths, present in sigmodontine rodents (Cricetidae) from a broad wetland area of the Río de la Plata, Argentina, was studied. A total of 250 sigmodontines were captured during a two-year sampling period: Scapteromys aquaticus and Oxymycterus rufus were the most abundant hosts, followed by Oligoryzomys nigripes, Akodon azarae, Oligoryzomys flavescens, and Deltamys kempi. This paper models the recreation demand for Iowa wetlands, combining survey data on both actual usage patterns (i.e., revealed preferences) and anticipated changes to those patterns under hypothetical increases in trip costs (i.e., stated preferences). We formulate and test specific hypotheses concerning potential sources of bias in each data type. We consistently reject consistency between the two data sources, both in terms of implied wetland values and underlying preference parameters. Careful attention is paid to the interpretations of the test results, noting particularly how the interpretation of the same results can vary with the "school of thought" of the reader.

ABSTRACT Several studies on the potential use of drosophilid assemblages as bioindicator systems have been carried out in the last years. Nevertheless, the successful application of these organisms in these systems requires adequate filling of several knowledge gaps. In this sense, little is known about drosophilid assemblages in wetlands and flooded areas. The present study provides the first survey of drosophilid species inhabiting such environments in the extreme South of Brazil and compares general beta-diversity patterns between assemblages of flooded versus nonflooded areas. Aves acuáticas en el humedal urbano de Tres Puentes, Punta Arenas (53° S), Chile austral OceanDocs

Los humedales urbanos son sitios de alta biodiversidad pero que pueden estar bajo presión antrópica si no son bien manejados. En la ciudad de Punta Arenas (53°S), el humedal de Tres Puentes posee características únicas para conformar un sitio con todos los componentes de conservación (educación, investigación, desarrollo sostenible). Se reporta su composición y abundancia en especies de aves acuáticas durante 6 temporadas estivales. Se registraron 31 especies lo que corresponde al 50 % de las aves acuáticas continentales de la región de Magallanes. Se discute la variabilidad interanual y los posibles impactos producidos por el hombre.

Knowledge of the geographical distribution of the birds in the Colombian Caribbean is still meager. Coastal wetlands are among the less studied environments in the area and one of the most important for their high bird richness. Since 1998, inventories and monitoring of the bird populations of the lower part of the Sinú river have been made. Until July 2005, 296 bird species have been recorded for the area, 41 of which are new for this part of the Caribbean; in addition, new wintering localities were noted for eight migratory species. Se estudió la biodiversidad vegetal acuática y palustre de la Laguna Coluco que forma parte de los Humedales del río Chepu (Chiloé, Chile). La hoya hidrográfica del río Chepu comprende la laguna Coluco y los tributarios de la cuenca: ríos Huentru, Negro, Puntra, Grande, Coluco, abarcando aproximadamente 100 km^2. Los muestreos de terreno se realizaron con la metodología fitosociológica de la Escuela Zürich – Montpellier. Con los censos de vegetación levantados a lo largo del transecto, se confeccionó una tabla fitosociológica inicial con 120 censos y 88 especies vegetales. Lake Kanyaboli and the surrounding Yala swamp wetland has been recognized as an important biodiversity hotspot. Recent population genetic and phylogenetic studies confirm the evolutionary importance of Lake Kanyaboli (Kenya) in preserving the cichlid fish fauna of Lake Victoria. The adjoining Yala swamp harbours the endangered swamp antelope Sitatunga (Tragecephalus spekii) and several papyrus endemic birds. Biometry of neotropical invertebrates inhabiting floodplain rivers: unraveling bionomy Iheringia, Sér. Zool.

ABSTRACT Currently, it is widely recognized that invertebrates play key roles in neotropical floodplains and in many other environments worldwide. However, little information has been published concerning their biometry, in spite that it represents an essential tool for many different studies. Here, we provided length-mass and length-length relationships by fitting the linearized model (log10 Y = log10a + b log10 X) and several mean biomass ratios ± SE for bivalves, gastropods, quironomids, ephemeropterans, oligochaetes and hirudineans. We measured, weighed, oven dried and incinerated to ashes specimens collected from 2005 to 2014 in the Paraná River, Argentina. Climate change and its interactions with complex socioeconomic dynamics dictate the need for decision makers to move from incremental adaptation toward transformation as societies try to cope with unprecedented and uncertain change. Developing pathways toward transformation is especially difficult in regions with multiple contested resource uses and rights, with diverse decision makers and rules, and where high uncertainty is generated by differences in stakeholders’ values, understanding of climate change, and ways of adapting.
